TCI was called into this site after three other firms had failed to solve a power quality problem. The symptoms reported: the main 1600 amp breaker in the office building was tripling every 3-4 hours, shutting down the entire building. Since this was a rental property and the problem remained unsolved for months, it was costing the property owners considerable lost revenue.

In an afternoon’s time, TCI completed the testing and identified the problem. The drives on the roof HVAC system were producing numerous (2000 amps) current transients an hour. The main breaker had an electronic breaker with a thermal sensor. The heat generated by the frequent current transients was enough to trip the breaker.

The solution was simple—install Innovative Technology surge
suppression at the roof top drives and the breaker. In addition, the electronic breaker was replaced with a conventional mechanical device.

Not only was the problem solved, but the inrush current that was
generated every 3 hours was also eliminated resulting in a savings of $3,000 in monthly electric bills.
